The eyes are dry and also irritated or the eyelids are reddened and painful. One wakes up in the morning with encrusted eyelids. This could indicate a meibomian gland dysfunction.
The meibomian glands are located in the upper and lower eyelids and exit onto the lid margins. These glands produce the lipid phase of the tear film by secreting an oily substance directly onto the eyelid margins. Thus, each time one blinks, the lipid phase is renewed, the function of which is to counteract premature evaporation and destabilisation of the tear. If the function of the meibomian glands is impaired or their exits are blocked, a lipid phase disorder occurs. The result is dry eyes, caused by a premature evaporation of the tear or watery eyes.
Typical symptoms of a lipid phase disorder caused by a meibomian gland dysfunction are
- reddened eyes and eyelid margins or encrusted eyelids
- watery eyes
- burning sensation
- symptoms predominately in the morning and improving throughout the day
Causes of a lipid phase disorder due to a meibomian gland dysfunction are e.g.
- hormone therapy (e.g. contraceptive pill)
- hormonal changes (e.g. menopause)
- dry eyes due to old age

EvoTears® OMEGA stands for
1. Omega-3
Omega-3 stands for omega-3 fatty acids. They are a constituent of the natural tear. Dry eyes are often accompanied by a lack of omega-3 in the tear film. The greater the omega-3 deficiency, the more severe the tear film disorder and associated corneal damage2.
EvoTears® OMEGA contains omega-3 fatty acids derived from algae and not from fish. This is why EvoTears® OMEGA is also suitable for vegans.
2. Perfluorohexyloctane
EvoTears® OMEGA is lipophilic, thanks to the innovative substance perfluorohexyloctane, and yet has the same refractive index as the tear. Thus, vision is not impaired.
Perfluorohexyloctane has other advantageous properties that have not been known to date in the treatment of dry eyes. EvoTears® OMEGA spreads very quickly and rapidly forms a protective layer over the tear to counteract premature evaporation. In addition, a drop has a volume of only about 10 μl and therefore up to 280 drops per 3 ml content can be dispensed from one bottle of EvoTears® OMEGA.
3. Being water-free
EvoTears® OMEGA are beside EvoTears® the second water-free drops in the treatment of dry eyes.
EvoTears® OMEGA combines effective protection against evaporation, thanks to an innovative substance, and being water-free with algae-derived omega-3 to soothe irritated eyes and eyelid margins.
Use of EvoTears® OMEGA
Due to its low surface tension EvoTears® OMEGA, like EvoTears®, may exit from the bottle without applying pressure. Therefore, the mode of use shown in the film is recommended.
